Our Trusted Catch® program goes beyond responsible sourcing to encompass all of our sustainability and quality initiatives to assure you that products that carry the BlueWater brand and the Trusted Catch® logo meet the highest quality standards, and that we are taking steps to minimize the environmental impact of our products.
Quality and Safety
Bringing you the freshest, highest quality seafood products is our passion. All of our ingredients and finished products go through rigorous quality checks that meet all Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) requirements. Started in 2000, GFSI is an international collaboration of the world’s leading food safety experts. They establish food safety guidelines based on best practices and promote continuous improvement in food safety management. All of our production facilities are GFSI certified by either the British Retail Consortium (BRC) or the Safety Food Quality Institute (SQF) with "A" grades. BlueWater, along with our sister company Gorton's, was one of the first seafood manufacturers in North America to have all our facilities certified as meeting the GFSI guidelines, demonstrating our continued commitment to maintaining a world-class food safety and quality management organization.
Because our packaging contributes to the waste we generate, we are continuously working to reduce plastic film, carton and shipping case tonnage. Additionally, we work with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) to promote the long-term health of forests. SFI is a non-profit organization that is internationally recognized as the largest single forest certification standard in the world. BlueWater ensures that our cartons and shipping cases meet SFI sourcing requirements. Furthermore, over 90% of the material we use in our shipping cases comes from recycled fiber.
Energy / Water Usage
We continuously work to minimize the environmental impact of our products through reducing energy and water usage and partnering with suppliers on lean thinking initiatives, which is why we were very proud to receive the 2012 Best Green Practices Award from the Boston Business Journal for our manufacturing commitment and performance in the area of conservation. BlueWater is also a SmartWay Transporation Partner. SmartWay is a collaboration between the US EPA and the freight transportation industry to track emissions and improve fuel efficiency.
We strongly believe that all employees, as well as all employees of our supply chain partners whether in Canada, the United States or overseas, deserve to be treated in a respectful and dignified manner. BlueWater has strict workplace and employment standards with respect to the treatment and working conditions of employees outlined in our BlueWater Workplace and Employment Standards Policy. We require all of our suppliers to review, sign, and comply with this policy each year. Additionally, we have begun to implement third-party audits to confirm compliance. Lastly, we educate personnel through formal training programs and by continuous communication with our suppliers as to our expectations regarding workplace and employment standards.
